Bank Holiday Trains
- AF (26th Dec 2024 - 08:07:16)

Anyone know why we don't have any trains on Boxing day. We used to get them, it's only been in the last few years that they shut down for 2 days.
I know in some areas they have rail works but not in this area.

We do have rail works in the area - the whole line from Farncombe to Petersfield is in the process of being re-signalled so there is likely some work happening somewhere.

The email I got from Network Rail last week suggests there is work happening at all the level crossings until Saturday:

Date and time:

Wednesday 25 December– Saturday 28 December 2024
04:00 - 01:00 Continuous

Locations:

Farncombe East Level Crossing
Milford Level Crossing
Witley Rail Access Point
Liphook Yard
Liss Common Level Crossing
Liss Station Level Crossing
Princes Bridge Level Crossing
Sheet Level Crossing
Kings Fernsden Level Crossing
Petersfield Level Crossing

Work:

Piling to support signalling equipment housing and obstacle detection at level crossings.

Works will be continuous throughout the planned shifts. However, in order to keep disruption to a minimum, all piling works at level crossings have been planned between the hours of 07:00 – 19:00.

Vibration monitoring equipment will be utilised when piling. If trigger measurements are reached, piling work will be stopped immediately.

To reduce the time spent piling, the first 1m of the pile location will be excavated by hand prior to Christmas. The remainder will be piled using Road Rail Vehicles.

Machines will not be left running when not in use. Simultaneous use of plants will also be kept to a minimum to reduce noise.

This work is critical to the project and the safety of the communities living near level crossings.

Task lighting to be used.

I don't doubt the information you have been given but the fact is that trains are running between Liphook and London on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They are running to a normal timetable. I will be using them. I suppose work can be undertaken on crossing with the trains still running.
However, my initial point remains that all trains in this area are no longer running on Boxing day and they used to.
I'm sure there would be a demand from leisure users and people like me who have to work through the festive period.

FYI I’ve just looked on the SWR website and as far as I know there’s no works on your line planned until new year, however, there’s planned works between Woking and Farnborough from tomorrow until Sunday the 5th January. Resulting in services from London to Weymouth being diverted through our line.

AF, I don’t think you are considering the mental health of train drivers! They now have a lot more money to spend due to their inflation busting pay increase. Now they have no reason to strike and be off work there needs to be more days where trains are not running so they can spend away their stress levels. No doubt, like teachers they will soon be taking industrial action to be given the right to work from home!
