Not Old Enough for the Day Centre??
- Liphook Day Centre (9th Jan 2025 - 10:56:05)

We often hear people say that they don't want to come to Liphook Day Centre because they are 'not old enough.' It made me wonder if people have the wrong impression of what we do here. We are not an elderly care facility. We are not a respite centre. We are not a room full of elderly people sitting in a line staring into space.

What we are is a SOCIAL MEETING PLACE! We provide a warm, friendly environment for people to meet, chat, make friends and join in. We help combat loneliness. We help forge new friendships. We relieve boredom by offering activities, games and events.

Some of our recent new members were unsure about joining, but have since said they 'love it here,' that it has 'changed their life,' and that they ' don't know what they would do without the day centre.' High praise indeed!

If you are feeling alone or just want a change of scene and some company, why don't you pop in for a cuppa and see what we're really about!

Actually we are all still in full time work in our 60s so most people can't attend. I'd love to retire but we are made to work until we're 67. i would attend if I could.

I didn't notice a specific age mentioned. However if you think it refers to those in their sixties there are plenty of 66 (the current retirement age) to 69 year olds who could be interested - plus early retirees - so perhaps best not to speak for "all"! Discussions on what the retirement age SHOULD be are perhaps better suited to a separate thread. The Day Centre seems a very cheerful and friendly place for those wishing to drop in l.

Al think the day centre ment those people that have retired and are wanting to find company there is no mention of age . There are a great many people that have retired and in their seventy’s and eighties perhaps alone that could benefit from the lovely food and company. Many people don’t retire until they are in their seventies or eighty’s . The day centre provides a fantastic service. A great many of our community doesn’t know about it it’s a way of getting the word out.

I'm still confused, is this a place for all age groups from mums and dads to elderly folk to come along and socialise and play games and get food or is it for retired and those approaching retirement?

Ah well a while.back it was called the over 60s club I didn't realise it had changed.

I think the over 60s used to be in the village hall . The day centre has been going for a very long time. I think it goes back to a lovely lady called Mrs Jackson think she received a MBE for her work. Not sure about the rules to attend but It’s a fantastic asset for liphook.

The obvious answer would be to have a look in on the days the centre is open. You can easily see whether the demographic is for you or not.

It appears I have caused some confusion - sorry about that!

I'll try again - The Liphook Day Centre is intended to be a social centre for older people (usually retirees aged 60plus). It won't appeal to everyone, and I appreciate that not everyone is free to attend during the week, but we are there for those who need us and for those looking for company and something to do.

I am just letting people know what is out there for those that are interested or have a need. If it's not for you - no problem! If you think it might be for you, do have a look at our website on www.liphookdaycentre.co.uk or pop in and have a cuppa and a chat with us to find out more.

Here's to making friends and looking out for each other - in whatever way you want.
