Am I wrong?
- Richard (7th Feb 2025 - 18:38:09)

Our son recently had a child and when we called around to meet the new addition I laughed out loud when they presented Raven. Call me old fashioned but I was taken aback a bit and laughed as I thought they were having a joke at my expense. Was I wrong for laughing?

Yes!

Re: Am I wrong?
- Crow (8th Feb 2025 - 06:11:07)

Well how very judgemental …. 😉

Re: Am I wrong?
- Sally (8th Feb 2025 - 07:09:44)

Hi Richard I would have laughed too! Try and keep a straight face when they present her sister Crow in years to come. Enjoy the family day out at Birdworld you may get free entry like when ann idiot inks themselves with a KFC tattoo and gets free chicken for life!

Re: Am I wrong?

It’s a bit of an evil name with dark connections. I could have gotten my head around Robin, Bluebird or even Blackbird.

Re: Am I wrong?
- Blue Tit (8th Feb 2025 - 10:26:16)

Careful Richard, you can’t call someone a blackbird anymore.

Re: Am I wrong?
- C (8th Feb 2025 - 13:45:25)

While I agree that Raven is a daft name for a baby, the choice of name is a huge decision for the parents and they must love it so maybe you were a bit insensitive for laughing.

Depends on the room. If the room reads miserable and nonsensical: I'd make my exit. Worse thing to do with snowflakes is to reinforce their dead arguments.

If the room feels jolly and sensible: I'd have a healthy laugh. Sounds like a fun family.

Re: Am I wrong?
- Sally (8th Feb 2025 - 16:40:43)

The parents may have given her this gender neutral name so she/he can transition easier later in life. Some people define as animals and furries these days.

Still a ridiculous name to give a child. Can you imagine the jokes in the classroom!

Re: Am I wrong?
- er (8th Feb 2025 - 22:04:28)

Sally, kids would worry a lot less about jokes in the classroom if we taught them that the people making jokes about their name needed a quick fix, on the nose, believe me kids will find 1000 things to ridicule each other about, Raven will either be brought up anxious about her name because the extended family are ior will not give a shit what joker in the back of the class says, confident in the knowledge that it'll only be said once and quickly regretted, Raven is a beautiful name, bring your kids up to be better and embrace your fears of difference and other, perhaps if we were all like the above posters, it would be a miserable, grey world, go Raven!

Re: Am I wrong?
- Anne (9th Feb 2025 - 09:02:18)

Can you imagine the parents of Raven reading these posts, how humiliating for them, particularly from the Grandparent to start all of this off. Yes, we all have heard of names that we don't think are the best, but it's not our place to be so publicly judgmental. I hope the child grows up in a loving world.

Re: Am I wrong?
- Polly (9th Feb 2025 - 10:34:34)

Perhaps Raven will have beautiful dark hair so the name will be self explanatory? It’s certainly unusual, but I’m sure like other less common names it will be normalised in time.

Re: Am I wrong?
- Sally (9th Feb 2025 - 14:09:41)

The raven represents the incarnation of evil, damned souls and Satan. Strange to call your child after an animal which is seen to be evil. Also in Greek mythology, ravens are associated with Apollo, the God of prophecy. They are said to be a symbol of bad luck
I’m guessing if you smoke enough of the happy weed the name might make sense to you! Her parents must be called Sky and Moon.

Re: Am I wrong?
- Joe (9th Feb 2025 - 15:39:12)

According to some sources on the internet Raven means wisdom, intellectual ability and spiritual prophecy. Have not come across any indication of evil.

Re: Am I wrong?
- Daniel (9th Feb 2025 - 19:14:19)

Clearly the parents of Raven are knobs because if they were normal approachable people the grandparents would have had a sensible conversation instead of asking the public for their advise.
I do agree Sally to call your child Raven is strange! What next Python? There’s the start of a great joke a Python a Raven and a Rat walk into a pub ………

Reminder to people who (possibly through parents/authorities support) identify as animals:

Human rights are for humans only.
Public services and institutions are for humans, with the exception of RSPA and similar animal charities.

So when your darling fluid daughter Jackdaw gets a winter virus she should seek help from the RSPB rather than at the human pharmacy and NHS.

Go ahead, entertain your children to try change their natural sex and humanity. Comedy all-round! :)

- OtherJames (10th Feb 2025 - 18:51:05)

Raven is alright as long as it doesn't clash with the surname. I once knew a Mr Loone!

Re: Am I wrong?
- Local (10th Feb 2025 - 21:35:16)

So the UK number 1 girls name is named after a small Mediterranean fruit with a hard pip and the top boys name is named in honour of a mythical bloke who built a giant floating zoo after Yahweh, the Israelite desert God, decided to kill everybody, and this lot are getting fret up about a child named Raven, I hope she grows up to be a confident, modern, dark haired beauty who couldn't care less what the old fuddy duddies think😂

Re: Am I wrong?
- Joe (11th Feb 2025 - 00:28:44)

Local, you are behind the times! Apparently the name Muhammad has overtaken Noah in the Uk as the top boys’ name. Also the sex of the baby was not mentioned- Raven could be a boy? Apparently it is popular as a “ non binary “ name.

Re: Am I wrong?
- Patk (11th Feb 2025 - 06:02:16)

Surely the parents have just copied the name of the eldest child of the Owen family at Ravenseat? The Yorkshire shepherdess .

Re: Am I wrong?
- danny (11th Feb 2025 - 13:03:50)

Everyone seems to feel their kids need try hard names these days to stand out. He'll stand out alright

Re: Am I wrong?
- John Jonson (11th Feb 2025 - 13:48:05)

Yes, current top boy name is after the ancient Muslim who might have meant well, but his current followers typically (not all) seem to interpret his words as an actual call for an actual Jihad.

So giving a binary name is now considered wrong thing to do for the possibility that the name given by the parents might confuse and compromise the vulnerable child's self-identification. Would it not work both ways? Would a binary child not be assumed to suffer by a non-binary name forced upon by weak, virtue signalling parents who seem to have lost their way?
