As the weather improves, we’ll all soon be getting out the lawn mowers again, so now’s a
good time to think about shed security. In the past month or so, there have been quite a
few shed breaks across the south. We generally stash all our garden tools and furniture
at the end of September and it is only now we are thinking about going back into the
shed. In the meantime, the light-fingered thief has been on his travels, helping himself
to anything he, or she, can lay their hands on. There is a huge market for second hand
lawn mowers, strimmers and other such tools, especially at this time of year.
Sheds, garages and outbuildings pose a real problem for security. Invariably they are
away from the protected ‘core’ of the home and are therefore more vulnerable. When
you start adding up the value of items in your shed, for instance, lawn mowers, garden
tools and garden furniture, it all adds up to a tidy sum indeed. The car boot sale,
unfortunately, provides a very convenient outlet for the thief to dispose of your stolen
goods, no questions asked! Don’t be tempted to buy cheap tools, for example, from the
bloke down the pub. How would you feel if it was your pride and joy tool box stolen from
your garage or shed being flogged off cheap?
A good quality padlock and hasp on your shed or garage will certainly deter the casual
thief but remember, the lock is only as strong as the door or frame to which it is fixed.
When did you last creosote (other brands and products are available!) your shed to
protect the wood from rotting?! Having an insecure shed in your garden potentially
provides the burglar with a comprehensive supply of tools with which to attack your
house!
