Initials and pseudonyms
- Scott (22nd Apr 2025 - 17:57:01)

Dear Editor

This is a request to uphold the criteria for possibly not accepting posts which are anonymous or use initials or pseudonyms on this forum.

I'm not asking for a breach in confidentiality rules but would it be possible to only include posts with names that correlate to the email title that you receive during the loading entry page.

It is getting increasingly difficult to give respect or levity to posters that want to have their opinion, interaction or esteemed wisdom read whilst remaining in the ether as an intial or pseudonym.

We would for example meet in the real world and exchange names, anecdotes and differences of opinion so why should it be different on a chat forum.

Just to clarify, Freedom of speech and the written word is paramount. Alternate views and a variety of opinions and contributors are so important to any debate or conversation but at least lets show our conviction by strapping our first name to the post.

The problem is they could just use a fake email address or have one that doesn't actually relate to their name. Facebook mostly requires your real name, but there are plenty of pseudonyms even there.

Dear Editor

Yes, I can see how there would be issues relating to verification of contributors but never the less I feel that the credibility of a view is undermined when dealing with unnamed contributors who can post at will with 100% clarity and in depth knowledge on it seems just about every topic known to humankind.

Would you consider opening another forum and possibly calling it Liphook Pseudonym Moanback and diverting some traffic there, I'm sure there will be plenty of entries and it would leave this forum for the more positive thinking, optimistic fun seekers among us ☺️✌️

So why don't you include your surname, Scott?

I don't have any problem with pseudonyms or initials.

Re: Initials and pseudonyms

I've already said D (possibly for Dierdre or Doreen) who knows? That I am not after a breach in confidentiality as that was not what this was about and therefore not adding my surname, rest assured my name is Scott , whats yours, D for Doris is it?

Nothing to add here but I'm anonymous so I can write anything contrary or overly self opinionated I like whilst wearing a keyboard cloak.

We can always tell genuine posters on here and those out just to have a laugh. If need be the editor can trace people through email addresses. My name isn't Doris, Scott, though I do know a lady called Doris. I did wonder over your name as Scott is a common pseudonym for homosexual rent boys in Brighton but I don't think anyone wants to hear about that.

Ohh D how naughty of you, but just love it.
Carry on you've brightened my day

@ D
Thank goodness I had finished my coffee, Hadn't heard that one before but boy it gave me a laugh.
What will Scott get out of knowing someones first name ? Will it satisfy their need to feel empathy or anger towards the poster, or a need to find so said poster. Whomever is behind the post is surely a person and not a bot. An opinion, is an opinion after all.
Perhaps people are aware that there are some very weird people out there who walk amongst us who might have harmful thoughts to those they disagree with.
Having had someone out me before on a post for what seemed like nefarious reasons, I would prefer people had their anonymity.

One wonders D how you would even know about the that particular Brighton scene you mentioned, have you a connection there?
Great response though, it really made me chuckle....Good sport!

I would actually welcome a slight change to the scope of this forum so it becomes purely limited to posts about local services and people selling/offering items. Occasionally it can be a really useful resource for these type of topics but increasingly the posts are vitriolic and completely irrelevant to anything related to Liphook and local matters. That is not the Editor’s fault and I am grateful to them for maintaining this forum voluntarily.

Re: Initials and pseudonyms

Oh dear, Scott, looks like our secret is out. Bugger! (no pun intended, as I'm sure no pun was intended by the word "connection"). Ooh! You are awful.

Re: Initials and pseudonyms

I whole heartedly agree Caroline.

This forum works so well for the local community. There are many plus points to it and I too would like to thank you Editor for continuing to run the site.

Many thanks to one and all☺️👍
