U3A round up
At the Monthly Meeting in the Millennium Hall at the beginning of the month, the
speaker was Matthew Jackson who treated the members to a very interesting
illustrated talk about Korea. Telling us how he was first invited to visit the country
by a Korean friend, he thought he would be visiting a third world country, but was
somewhat surprised at the very high tech one that he found. Since then he has
become passionate about Korea and has worked for several years as a volunteer
with the Korean Spirit and Culture Project. He spoke of many of the country’s works of
art and inventions, such as the world’s first printing press and how Korea now leads
the world in the techniques of skyscraper construction. It was fascinating learning
about the rapid development of their shipbuilding industry from a zero start (and zero
knowledge) to what it is today. Altogether a real eye opener!
The next monthly meeting on 2nd April is the A.G.M. and only open to members
As usual at Liphook U3A, March has been a busy month with the various activity
groups. This is but a small selection:
The group who enjoy regular Minibus Outings claim to visit places where the sun
always shines, and it certainly did for their first outing of the 2012 season, on 26th
March, when they visited Goodwood House.
On the same day the Photography Group, which was only formed a few months ago,
took themselves off to Bramshott Church to put their new found composition skills into
practice. At the April meeting there will be a slide show of some of their efforts, which
will no doubt prompt many comments and some criticisms. All part of the fun!
The Strollers’ Group, who enjoy short strolls of about an hour or so in the countryside
and to places of interest twice a month, have enjoyed a couple of outings in fine
weather during March. On Friday, 9th they went exploring some of the trails in Alice
Holt Forest and Friday, 23rd saw the group taking in the sunshine and sea air at West
Wittering. This was a delightful stroll along the beach and around East Head, followed
by a splendid lunch at West Wittering’s Lamb Inn.
However, the Wine Appreciation Group really know how to push the boat out and
enjoy themselves. Breaking away from their usual pattern of interesting talks and
wine tasting, they took themselves off to visit Ardres in France. Apparently everyone
enjoyed themselves and have just about recovered from the experience!
