Back to school to save water

Primary school pupils in Liphook have the chance to meet Sally Shower and save water with a talk from their local water company. South East Water’s Education programme has grown in time for the new school term with the addition of six specially trained school speakers who will be meeting pupils in Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire.

Pupils will learn about where their water comes from and how it’s treated, the importance of water for their health and how making small changes in the home and garden can save a significant amount of water.

Sally Shower, the Company’s water efficiency mascot, will also be on the lookout for the next generation of water savers as she sets each pupil the Four Minute Shower Challenge with a specially adapted egg timer to take home to show how long they, and their families, spend in the shower.

Mary Herbert, one of the new school speakers for Hampshire said the team will be encouraging the pupils to think about the amount of water they use and how they can be more water efficient. Mary added: “We hope some childrenwill become the educator in their homes, teaching their families the small differences that we can all make to save a lot of water” Lee Dance, Head of Water Resources and Environmental, said: “Education is a priority for South East Water as we recognise the importance insharing our knowledge of the world of water with our youngest customers.

“By combining topics such as science, nature and the environment, planning, engineering and citizenship, we are able to get children excited about water and understanding the importance of saving water and being water efficient.”

The talks are aimed at pupils between eight and 11 within the Company’s supply area which covers parts of Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire and can help schools apply for the Eco-Schools status.
