dogwalkers

Please be aware ,,, there have been reports of dogs becoming very ill after walking at Frensham i understand there is something poisonous being dropped around

Quite a few years back whilst working in dog kennels, a great dane came in being treated by a vet, having fallen ill at Frensham. It was thought the water had made the dog ill. The dog did not improve after a couple of days, and I noticed it's foot beginning to swell. On closer inspection I could see puncture wounds, which gave away the fact the dog had been bitten by an adder. We rushed the dog to the vets but by then it was too late. Please be aware Frensham is the perfect place for adders , so if your dog becomes ill I would suspect an adder bite first just to be on the safe side.

here is a copy of an email i received

PLEASE CAN EVERYONE STAY AWAY FROM FRENSHAM!!!! Yesterday Winnie (blonde lab) was taking to emergency vet after having allergic reaction to something she may have eaten/swallowed, the vet said it was from Frensham pond as someone has been leaving poisoned food or poisoning the water as they have had a number of cases from that walking area. Please do not take your dogs to Frensham pond as this leads to the dog being extremely ill if not fatal. Please pass this message on to everyone with a dog. Thank you

Also if there is a poisoning problem (i hope not) help yourselves and dogs by following the rules set out on the information boards at both the big and little pond at frensham, at this time of year dogs should be kept on leads to prevent them from disturbing ground nesting birds. So this would rule out ground poisoning and im pretty sure dogs are not allowed in the water at both ponds.(If i remember right). If the rules are followed this would rule out dogs picking up a poison in the water, if there is one

“Waverley Borough Council received a number of enquiries about the alleged poisoning of dogs that had apparently visited various countryside sites in the area. These reports were taken seriously by Waverley and contact was made with many local vets to see if the story could be substantiated. To date, we have been unable to find any evidence to suggest that these incidents are true and believe the claims to be a cruel hoax.” - statement issued 17 May 2012

PS both ponds were tested yesterday by the Environment Agency for potentially harmful blue-green algae and found to be clean.

I asked my partner about this as she works for the Blue Cross and this issue has been circulated as a hoax. No local vets have had any issues with this

Yesterday we took two yorkies for a walk, we started near deer hut pub and went towards lake, then via Mod training grounds. We noticed adders warning signs, but we were already 5 km down to walk. That's where daisy was bitten probably by adder. She is fighting for her life now at the vets. I wish there was warning signs as you start walk. This walk was found and recommended on Internet. I'm am not happy, hope our dog will survive, I will never came back there.

Anna

So sorry to hear about your dog...that area is well known for adders and we tend to avoid it at this time of year. You're right, perhaps the signage should be more obvious.

So sorry to here about your dog, and hope it recovers. We have plenty of country side around us here which is perfect habitat for adders, so keeping away from that area will not prevent coming across more. This is part of our ecology around here. When the sun is out, especially now, the adders will bask in the heat. It is always wise to keep your dog on a lead at these times, and also to make a fair bit of noise, as this warns the snake of your approach. Always assume an adder strike if your dog is unwell after a walk, then you are erring on the side of caution

i am so so sorry about your dog. hope he can recover.
as has been mentioned its a well known area for adders.
if you are not local to the area you may not know, never walked my dogs up there in the summer.
but am surprised there was not a mention on the internet. so a warning sign near the area would help.
even dogs on a lead would be risky unless you are noisy when you walk to scare the snakes away.
best to stay away in hot weather.
