Driving to Leatherhead
- Liam Maddock (27th Aug 2012 - 14:09:23)

Hi, I am moving to Liphook in September and will be starting a new job in Leatherhead. Can anyone advise of the best way to drive to Leatherhead, what the traffic is like in the early mornings London bound on the A3 and whether the train may be the better option ?
We're finding this site invaluable for information on the area and look forward to moving!

Regards,

Liam

Hello

I don't commute to Leatherhead, but do commute anti-clockwise around the M25 in the morning from Liphook. I would advise A3/M25 to j9, the Leatherhead turn-off. If you leave Liphook pre 07.30 you shouldn't have too many problems and it should take around 45mins. Later than this you will hit traffic through Guildford and on the M25. Obviously, with the M25 involved, there are always some problems, but the commute is reasonable and theoretically quick.

The alternative backroads route that I know of (I am sure there are more), would be Haslemere - Godalming - Shalford - Chilworth - over Newlands Corner - East Horsley and out through Bookham and Leatherhead. This is a nice route, but would take a while and you would still encounter rush hour traffic around Godalming and Shalford. Its good as an emergency non-M25 route.

You can take the train and change at Guildford to the Guildford London Rd line. I used to get this train many many years ago and it was a slow stopping service, but things may have changed since then. I do think it would be quicker to drive.

I hope this helps and you have a good move.

Hi,

I drive from Liphook to Leatherhead on a daily basis. I take the A3 Northbound through the Hindhead tunnel. Continue along the A3 past Guildford. Take the slip road off the A3 at Burnt Common and follow the road signs to East Clandon. At the main traffic lights turn left onto the A246 to Leatherhead and follow the signs.

It usually takes me about 45 minutes if there are no accidents at Guildford.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

John F.
