Post Office Relocation
Plans to relocate Liphook's post office to a small supermarket on the outskirts of the village when Alldays closes for business next month, has infuriated residents and the parish council.
Last Monday night parish councillors, at their planning meeting, agreed to fight the proposal and organise a petition.
The anger follows a letter to Liphook parish council from the Post Office informing it of the resignation of its subpostmaster and subsequent move of its services from Alldays to an existing Co-Op shop in Headley Road, some 500 yards away.
The move comes into force on Thursday February 20, with the current post office in Alldays pulling down the shutters for the last time the previous afternoon.
With the new post office situated further away from the centre of Liphook, Mrs James believes it would create difficulties for the elderly of the village from Fletchers Fields and people living in Chiltley Manor.
Liphook Parish Council clerk Tony Groves said that petition forms were available from the parish office at the Haskell Centre in Midhurst Road.
A spokesman for the Co-Op confirmed that it had brought Alldays and acquired the post office business. "To our knowledge no other offers were received by Alldays to acquire the business and the post office."
"Whilst we acknowledge that the post office will be situated outside the town centre, it is hoped that this will be off-set by the provision of ample free parking, easy access and disabled facilities at its new location."
