Deers Hut
- Lesley (12th Mar 2012 - 09:40:45)
Have just heard a rumour which I cannot believe can be true but thought I would ask the good people of Liphook to refute it.
The Deers Hut is to be demolished and a 70 room hotel built in its place.
As I write this it seems a highly unlikely thing to happen but I thought I would ask anyway.
| | I have merged two threads, the original "Deers Hut Demolition" with the later one just entitled "Deers Hut". |

Unlikely as there is a massive hotel just less than a mile up the road from it. Deers hut is also a listed building I believe.

Fear not.
A planning application has been made and passed for an extended kitchen and staff quarters plus substantial interior refurbishment to increase a dining area.
There will also be an extended car park but I have seen no plans for hotel rooms.

The planning application comes across as being a 'test the water' jobby, to see what could be passed. These extensions appear to be huge, totally out of character with the historic fabric of the building. Bearing in mind that the Deers Hut sits on a pretty large plot, it would not suprise me if the pub is converted into residential, and a significant number of houses are not developed on the surrounding land eventually!
Also, the property is leasehold, so I doubt the current publicans have any imput on this!!!!

The Deer's Hut, is, I believe, now owned by the same person who until a few years ago, owned The Links. That person then turned the Links round into a wonderful local pub and restaurant which for many years was the hub of Liphook. Under Fullers it has lost some of that atmosphere, although has continued to be popular. I hope that the Deer's Hut will now turn into a pub that will, like the Links did, retain its "older" qualities, but give Liphook a welcome local pub and restaurant without the "tacky" stuff.

So perhaps that is why the lady behind the bar told a group of charity walkers from Liss that there would not be a pub for them to walk to next year.
A lot of the land around the pub has common rights attached which would prevent any development of the site (or so I believe).
The Deers Hut has such potential and with some sensitive improvements, such as The Links had, would make it a great place for a meal and a pint.
Does Mt Northcutt own it or does it still belong to the brewery?

I saw Debs at the site the other day so expect the Deers Hut to have the same high quality standard as that of the Links before it was sold. All anyone needs to do is look forward to when the doors open on the new refubished venue. They did wonders with the Old Links when that was converted and I am sure they will do the same with this one. Everyone will be welcome I am sure.

Apparently the campsite has been binned but looking at the planning showed it would continue, talking to neighbours and one from the council I think they may have played a game to get the planning through. But actually when i walked by it doesnt seem they have even stuck to the planning shown in the EHDC site, i think they are are taking everyone for a ride!

Just been invited into the Deers Hut to have a look around before its opening tomorrow. Its original features have been uncovered including a bread oven and it has dining for 30 + people, wonderful decor and lovely garden to the rear.. Recommend this pub to anyone, menu is first class !

Deers Hut looking VERY good. I must admit to a little over-indulgence with the red wine on their opening night but feel ok today - so must be good!
We wish them well, we loved it.

Went to the Deers Hut last night and it is a stunning transformation! Absolutely huge too inside. But the decor is lovely and the whole place has a much more cosy and clean feel.
Had a meal from the main menu and it was lovely. The menu is a little limited at the moment but they assured us they were doing specials soon.

Just had lunch at the newly transformed deers hut and am very impressed! Did not recognise the place inside they have made it seem both spacious and cosy with little restaurant areas. The menu, as others have mentioned, is quite limited at the moment particularly if you are vegetarian. Our meals were lovely and the prices are what you would expect for a good food pub - similar to the links but much better. The staff are all very young but all friendly and no complaints during the course of our meal. All in all very impressed, nice addition to the village.

That's good to know, I popped into the old place for a beer once after walking the Downs and found them a bit unfriendly, never went back. (I know you can't judge by one incident)
Will look forward to trying the new restaurant, great location.

Wow! It is unrecognisable. The decor is beautiful, great atmosphere, really large and spacious but cosy, friendly staff, great selection of spirits and great menu (we didn't eat but it looks good and heard people complimenting it! Agreed a few more veggie options might be nice but i'm sure that will happen with time).
Overall, definately recommend that people go and try it out, because you will be amazed. It's quite lovely.

I am sure your wife would love you to buy it by the bottle! volume discount must be cheaper than buying her just ONE glass! It is like having just one glass of beer?

I'm not sure if they are re-opening their site, but if you're lost for somewhere to go, Nic and I have a site, in Hewshott Lane (only a few miles from the Deers Hut) - and you are most welcome.
We don't have a website but we are on lovecamping.co.uk/... and you can call Nic on 07846766343.

well the refurb is certainly complete & it really does look lovely, with lots of new soft furnishings, new furniture that is inkeeping with the name, however the customer is paying for the refurb !
Drinks are expensive, especially the wines, which is a shame !
The food well - best to avoid this, ist's nothing special , and in fact they really can't cook !
The steaks are over priced, on the menu without the weight [ which I thought was a requirement] , and not cooked well at all !
at £19.50 for a steak, I expect gastro level, such as Tom Kerridge, however this it is not !
Its over priced, poor quality food, served by staff who need more training.
We watched tables being laid, with staff putting their fingers on the inside of glasses, and reaching across customers, saying nothing. !
They are what they are, a dressed up pub, & not a very good one at that .
A shame, as the area needs more really good pubs, to give places like the DOC a run for its money.
